    2020 HCSA BUILDxPLAY Co-design Project

A collaboration with Aryna Affendy, Syarifah Syaqirah, Haw Xiao Huan and Michelle Fam, to co-design the yard at HCSA with the community, which mainly consists of single-parent families. Through engaging the beneficiaries during a carnival, we were better able to understand their needs and hence worked towards achieving the goal.

    SERVICE LEARNING

When I first heard about this project, I was pretty excited to be able to work on something meaningful and impactful. To me, having the chance to be able to design something to make a lasting impact on the lives of the beneficiaries motivated me to do the best that I can. Having to venture into spatial design the very first time when I've been trained in the product design field seemed daunting at first. However, with the guidance of my lecturers and going through refinements after refinements with my group members, I was able to look at the project as an opportunity to grow rather than a challenge to overcome. This project taught me to look at a problem from different perspectives to find a solution. For instance, what the children think is best for them may not be the best for the management or their parents, while what the parents think is best for their children may not be what they enjoy and what the space can afford. However, through multiple refinements, I am happy to say that we have came up with a design which meets the needs of all three parties. All in all, this project gave me a whole new perspective towards design in general and reminded me of the very reason why I embarked on this journey of design.

    DESIGN THINKING

How might we redesign the yard at HCSA to bring communities together, while at the same time making the area safe for children to play?

    CONCEPTS

    FENCI

Fenci is a train-inspired interactive wall made up of upcycled materials. While providing an interactive and fun envrionment for communities to come together, it doubles as a barrier from outsiders, keeping the area safe for the children to hone their skills and play.
